Today we want to look at the third soil in the parable of the sower: the thorny soil.
The third soil that Jesus mentions is the seed that falls among the thorns. Of this soil, Jesus says, “they are the ones who hear the word, and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.” (Mark 4:18-19) This is when the Word takes root in our heart and then because of life circumstances, it becomes unfruitful.
Jesus identifies 3 things that compete with the Word for supremacy in hearts: cares of this world, deceitfulness of riches, and the desire for other things. The cares of this world would be the everyday demands of this life such as your spouse, your kids, your job, and other things of that nature. The deceitfulness of riches is when we are tricked into believing that money is everything and so we prioritize getting and having money as our source as opposed to the Word. Finally, the desire for other things is when we have desires and ambitions for things here on earth that aren’t Jesus. They might be good desires or ambitions and could even be from God, but when they become more important than Him Himself and His Word it makes us unfruitful. We need to constantly be checking our heart to see who or what has supremacy in it.
