We finished yesterday by talking about being sanctified and becoming like Jesus. Today we want to talk about the number one way that we can participate and cooperate with being sanctified: looking at Jesus. We will look at what happens as we look at Jesus and how to do it.
Looking at Jesus is the single most transformative thing that you can do. In talking about His return, 1 John 3:2 says that when we see Him we will be like Him. 2 Corinthians 3:18 says that we can now look at Jesus without hindrance and as we do we are transformed into His image. Furthermore, in encouraging believers in staying true to Jesus and overcoming sin, Colossians 3:1-2 encourages us to seek the things that are above and set our minds on the things that are above. All three of these verses have the same main point if you look to Jesus, you will be transformed and become like Him. This is the single most transformative thing you can do, it is not a self-help book, not changing your diet, not putting up restrictions on your phone or in your life. It is just looking at Jesus. Therefore, the question becomes how do I look at Jesus?
You look at Jesus by giving Him the attention of your heart and mind or meditating on Him. We cannot see Jesus in the flesh, but you and I can set the attention of our heart and mind upon Him whether or not He is physically present or not. We can do this through Bible reading. As we read the Bible, we give our attention to what He is saying on the page. We can do this through prayer. In prayer, we set our mind on Him and talk to Him, whether it is thanking Him or asking Him for something. We can do this through worshiping Him. As we sing songs to Him about who He is or what He is done, we are focusing our heart and mind on Him. Bible reading, prayer, and worship are the three main ways that we set the attention of our heart and mind on Him and thereby look at Him.
As we look at Jesus, we will see Him rightly and love for Him will develop. This love for Him will cause us to be like Him and overcome whatever we are facing because we love and want Him more than that other thing. In addition, we see that He satisfies way more than that other thing and we begin to pick Him over other things. Therefore, we want to strongly encourage you to take time every day to look at Jesus in those three ways: Bible reading, prayer, and worship.
