The sixth benefit of reading the Bible is knowing the truth and having a firm foundation to stand upon. Jesus says that He Himself is the Truth. (John 14:6) In addition, He said that if we would abide in His word we would know the truth (Him) and the truth would set us free. (John 8:31-32) This is so key in today’s world because people want to define truth however they want, but it is really just their feelings or their own experience. Jesus and the Word, the Bible, stand outside of time. (John 1:1) Since, the Word was established outside of time that means that it cannot be changed with time. Therefore, we can be encouraged that if it was true then, it is still true now and we don’t have to be tossed to and fro by every latest trend.
In addition, Jesus said in Matthew 7 wrapping up the sermon on the mount, that if we heard His Word and did it, it was like building our house on a firm foundation so that when the storms come it will not be destroyed. We are all going to have storms come in our life through various circumstances and so if you read His Word and do it, you will be able to stand firm through the storms and will make it out on the other side. Finally, the Bible says that at the end of the age there are going to be false prophets preaching lies and we need to be careful to not be deceived by them. (1Timothy 4:1-3) How do we do that? By knowing the truth through reading the Bible.
