The fourth benefit of reading the Bible is that you will be sanctified. The word sanctify means to make holy. Jesus is holy and so to be sanctified is to be made like Jesus. In John 17:17, Jesus asks the Father to sanctify us by His word. Therefore, as you read the Bible the Father will make you like Jesus. How does this happen? Hebrews 4:12 says, “... the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, dividing the division between joint and marrow, spirit and soul, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” As you read the Bible, the thoughts and intentions of your heart will be seen. You will see how you are like Jesus and how you are not. The Holy Spirit will convict you of how you are not like Him and will help you repent and make the changes that are necessary.
In addition, Jesus says that if we abide in His word we will truly be His disciples.(John 8:31) A disciple is someone that hears Jesus’ teachings and does them, which ultimately makes them like Him. Therefore as you read the Bible, you will have what He says in you and you will begin to do it and as a result you will be like Him: sanctified.
